Bangor Gas adding lines in Brewer

BREWER, Maine — Businesses and residents in the downtown area — between Center and Wilson streets, and along Union Street — will soon have access to new Bangor Gas Co. lines that will be installed this spring, Jon Kunz, marketing and sales manager for the company, said Tuesday.

Bangor Gas also has plans to install roughly a half-mile of natural gas infrastructure between Interstate 395 and Cianbro in South Brewer Windows 7 serial key, but is still waiting for potential customers sign up for service before moving ahead, Kunz said.

The city will benefit from the new gas lines, Finance Director Karen Fussell said in a letter to City Manager Steve Bost.

The downtown gas line extension “will allow City Hall to convert to natural gas (a $5 Windows 7 Activation Key,000-7,000 per year savings),” Fussell wrote. “As you know the Brewer Auditorium converted to gas last fall and they have already realized over $7,000 in savings this winter alone compared to what they would have spent for heating oil.”

The downtown line “would be to serve Getchell Brothers McAfee Product Key, City Hall, a church and some other businesses in that area,” Kunz said. “We’re going to be extending down Union Street, across North Main and heading north and south,” where a number of homes and apartment buildings are located.

The proposed South Main Street extension “will provide upwards of $20,000 per year in cost savings for our Water Pollution Control Facility on Oak Street,” the finance director said.

Cianbro officials also are interested in tapping the proposed Oak Street line, Joe Cote, general manager of Cianbro’s Eastern Manufacturing Facility in South Brewer, said Tuesday.

“Natural gas is clean and certainly in recent years has been quite competitive,” he said.

Cianbro currently uses an alternate fuel that is stored in tanks that would be eliminated once the underground line is installed, Cote said.

“Anytime we can remove or eliminate tanks that can be struck or contacted, it’s a good thing,” he said. “It provides a safer environment. If there are any leaks, it’s lighter than air and dissipates. For those reason it makes good sense.”

By converting to natural gas, Cianbro officials “will lower their cost on the site by about two-thirds,” Kunz said.

The sizable price gap between natural gas and heating oil in recent years has made natural gas very inviting for many communities, which spend thousands of dollars heating municipal and school buildings. It also has caught the attention of Gov. Paul LePage, who has made expanding Maine’s natural gas infrastructure one of his top priorities.

To attract more South Main Street customers, Bangor Gas sent a letter to residents and business owners in that area of the city on Friday. The letter features information about the proposed project and where to sign up.

According to the company’s website, 24 service contracts are needed and 13 have been signed for the South Main Street project, which stretches from Grove to Oak streets.

There are a total of five gas line extension projects approved or being considered for Brewer this year. The approved projects are North Main Street and a portion of Longfellow and Washington streets. The three under consideration are on South Main Street, Acme Road and Maple Street, the gas company’s website states.

Bangor Gas also is working to add lines in Bangor, Orono and Bucksport.

The Last Free Upgrade

May 17, 2012 Author admin

With the news of Verizon’s decision to begin charging $30 for phone upgrades effective April 22, I’ve realized that I need to stop dragging my feet and upgrade my daughter’s phone. Verizon is following the lead of AT&T and Sprint, both of whom already charge $36 for upgrades.

We have three phones on our family account, and have three very different needs. I have an iPhone. I resisted a smart phone for a long time, thinking that it was unnecessary and not wanting to pay for the data package. Now I cannot imagine life without it. I never knew what a convenience it would be to check email while I was on the run, or pull up a recipe at the grocery store so I’d know what to pick up for dinner, or check TeamSnap to find out where the soccer game is now that I’m already on my way there. I’m not even sure where my “real” camera is anymore!

On the other hand, my dad is 84 and lives alone. He keeps his cell phone with him all the time “just in case.” Dad’s not the most patient person when it comes to new technology, so when his cell phone died, the option of learning his way around a new phone was not ideal. A Jitterbug, with its large replica watches, easy to use and read buttons and simple design would be a great option for him. Jitterbugs are available for a very reasonable monthly fee with no contract — but then I’d be paying for double service as we’re locked into our current contract with his cell phone. My dad wanted to stay with the same phone, but it is no longer available through our carrier. That’s when eBay came to the rescue. I was able to find a new phone identical to the phone that needed replacing. Dad took both phones to the store, they transferred his contacts over to his new phone and he was back in business. Of course, he got a flat tire during the time when he was without a phone replica watches!

My teenage daughter would like a smartphone, but I’m just not ready for that yet and she doesn’t want one badly enough to pay for the data package herself. However, there aren’t many basic phones out there that meet the “cool” expectations of a teenager. Usually your carrier will offer more choices online than in the store, but keep in mind that you are not confined to the choices on your carriers website. That doesn’t mean you can go to a competing carrier site and get a phone, but you can get a phone from another source such as Costco. This time we found a great option for $9.99 at Costco, significantly less than it sells for elsewhere.

If you’re considering changing plans, Costco is a great option. They don’t charge activation fees for new service replica watches, which can become pricey as you add more lines to your account. Costco offers plans by AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile and they also offer free shipping and free accessories. The accessory bundle varies depending on the carrier, but generally includes a case and vehicle charger. Costco partners with Wireless Advocates, so if you purchase online you don’t need to be a Costco member (you leave the Costco site to make your purchase). I do recommend that you know and be familiar with what you are purchasing. If you want to go to the warehouse and look at cell phones, you’ll need a Costco membership.

Finally, a word about insurance for cell phones. Check into the actual replacement cost for your phone when making the decision about insurance. Upgrade phones are frequently offered for much less than the retail price — but if something does happen, without insurance you may find yourself paying full retail for the replacement. On the other hand, if the phone costs less than $100, it’s probably not worth the cost of the monthly fee for insurance along with the deductible. Deductibles vary depending on the carrier and the phone, ranging anywhere from $39 to $130, so read the fine print. The number of claims per phone per year is also limited. Insurance doesn’t cover water damage, so if you are among the 19% who have dropped your phone in the toilet, having it insured would not have helped anyway!

Do you have any great tips for saving on your cell phone bill? Are you loyal to your cell carrier or would your throw them down in a hot minute if a better deal came along? How do you manage your upgrades — do you upgrade at the earliest opportunity or “save” them for emergencies such as lost or broken phones?

Bofors Swedish Whistleblower gives clean chit to

News Desk: In a startling revelation, the Swedish whistleblower, who had blown the lid off the Bofors case, has finally revealed his identity nearly 25 years after the scam rocked both India and Sweden.

In an interview appeared on the website hoot.org, former Swedish police Chief Sten Lindstrom said that he had leaked over 350 documents to Indian journalist Chitra Subramanian, who had broken the story first.

Lindstrom also admitted that he was the journalist’s secret informant, who operated under the pseudonym of Swedish Deep Throat. He had led the probe into the Bofors-India gun deal.

The illegal payoffs case had rocked the ties between India and Sweden in the late 1980s. Even former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had come under scanner.

Giving a clean chit to Rajiv Gandhi, the whistleblower said that there was no evidence to show that he had taken a bribe in the 15 billion dollar Bofors deal. However, he alleged that Gandhi watched the massive scam in India and Sweden and did nothing to protect the main accused Ottavio Quattrokey.

Lindstrom said Karen Millen Dresses sale, “Ardbo, (Bofors managing director), had written in his notes that the identity of N (Arun Nehru) becoming public was a minor concern but at no cost could the identity of Q (Quattrokey) be revealed because of his closeness to R (Rajiv Gandhi)”.

Quattrochi was paid bribes by Swiss arms manufacturer Bofors and nobody in Sweden or Switzerland was allowed to interrogate him, he said.

The revelation could be a big relief for megastar Big B as Lindstrom further said that the case against Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan Discount Missoni Dresses, who was the then Congress MP, and his family was planted in a Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter by Indian investigators.

Audi blurs the line between show and commercial wi

May 15, 2012 Author admin

The current state of the automotive industry is all about blurring lines. Cars and trucks used to be on opposite sides of the market until crossovers blurred the line. Coupes and convertibles have come closer together with the proliferation of the retractable hard-top. Even the line between manual and automatic transmissions has been blurred by the advent of CVTs, DCTs and sequential gearboxes of every sort. And the same could be said for advertising.

While automakers used to pitch their products in short commercial spots – and most still do – some have started producing their own content. That is to say, the intermission has become the main act. Just look at BMW’s film series The Hire, or Audi’s new television program Untitled Jersey City Project.

Filmed by True Blood and Game of Thrones director Daniel Minahan, the plot revolves around a couple of young architects hired to build a stadium in Jersey City, just across the river from Manhattan Tattoo Supplies, but soon find themselves in over their heads. The sequence jumps around a moving timeline Tattoo Supplies, starting with the climax, as the protagonist zips around New Jersey in his new Audi A6. Each two-minute episode is set to air on FX every Sunday night for eight weeks… or you could just jump past the break and watch them all right here.

The War Within Islam

May 14, 2012 Author admin

“See how the Christians love each other Replica BCBG Dresses!” This used to be the secular response to the fratricide between Catholics and Protestants Herve Leger sale, let alone the schisms within the Catholic Church and the vicious quarrels between different schools of Calvinism. (When the Baptists of Danbury, Conn., wrote to Thomas Jefferson, asking for his assurance against persecution and generating his famous “wall of separation” response, it was the Congregationalists of Connecticut of whose intolerance they were apprehensive.)

Within Islam, these lines of division are many times more acute. Ahmadi Muslims are considered impossibly heretical by most other followers of the Prophet, and Ismaili Muslims are looked upon askance in many quarters as well, but the rivalry between Sunnis and Shiites (which also conceals numerous poisonous rifts between different interpretations and leaderships in both camps) has become one of the most toxic phenomena in the world today. On Web sites that offer advice to the devout, Sunnis and Shiites ask their imams and ayatollahs whether it is permitted to take the life of a member of the other sect. On American campuses, Muslim student groups now shun one another on a confessional basis. Throughout the Arab and Persian media, moods of excommunication and denunciation are vocally expressed. Almost every day in Iraq, as has been well-reported, a mosque is blown up or a religious procession shredded by other Muslims. As is less well-reported, the same thing happens in Pakistan almost every week. And it is waiting to happen in other countries, too, as the Alawite sect that runs Syria (Alawism being a splinter of Shiism) gets ready for another confrontation with the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, and as Sunni minorities in Iran become restive at the increasingly sectarian character of the Shiite dictatorship.

The schism may not appear to be doctrinal, since it arises from a dynastic squabble of the seventh century over the disposition of the Prophet Mohammed’s inheritance. (Christianity spared itself this kind of earthly split by making it impossible for anyone but Dan Brown to believe that Jesus had a sexual nature, let alone any offspring. It went on to split about matters like the Trinity, which raised the awkward question of monotheism.) But Sunni and Shiite disagreements Cheap Herve Leger gown, in effect, do the same thing. Those who worship at the shrines of any of the 12 imams or who foresee the return of the “occluded” 12th one are idolators in Sunni eyes. While those who do not recognize the martyrdom of the prophet’s grandson Hussein, according to Shiites, are following worldly caliphs whose rule is destined to pass away. This might seem quaint if it did not involve the quailing of many Sunni-dominated states at the prospect of an Iranian thermonuclear capacity.

Thus, the extreme forces of Sunni Wahhabism and the takfir school that form the hard core of al-Qaida may have been brilliant in the short term in their declaration of war against Shiism. They have certainly made Iraqi life very nearly unlivable and helped to wreck the prospects of a federal democracy there. But there is evidence that even Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri told their late brother Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to rein it in a bit. Delicious though it is to send heretics to hell, they murmured, the long-term cost of inter-Islamic bloodshed might be a trifle high. It is too late for that afterthought now; the war is on in earnest. After the savage demolition of the golden dome in Samarra, only a very few Shiite demagogues tried to blame the atrocity on the Jews. They knew very well who had done this terrible thing, and they acted, and continue to act, accordingly.

I have met a few very hard-line right-wingers who say: So what? If one lot of Islamists wants to slaughter another, who cares? It’s very important to repudiate this kind of “thinking.” Religious warfare is the worst thing that can happen to any society, and it now has the potential to spread to societies that are not directly involved. For the most part, official U.S. policy in Iraq has been sound in this respect, always working for a compromise and recently losing American lives to rescue the moderate Shiite leadership from a murder plot hatched by a messianic Shiite militia. Even where this policy fell short—as in the appalling execution of Saddam Hussein—the American Embassy urged the Maliki government not to conduct the hanging on the day of the Eid ul-Adha holiday that would most humiliate the Sunnis. We cannot flirt, either morally or politically, with divide and rule.

However, the self-generated Islamic civil war does have significance in the wider cultural struggle. All over the non-Muslim world, we hear incessant demands that those who believe in the literal truth of the Quran be granted “respect.” We are supposed to watch what we say about Islam Cheap Karen Millen Dresses, lest by any chance we be considered “offensive.” A fair number of authors and academics in the West now have to live under police protection or endure prosecution in the courts for not observing this taboo with sufficient care. A stupid term—Islamophobia—has been put into circulation to try and suggest that a foul prejudice lurks behind any misgivings about Islam’s infallible “message.”

Well Discount Herve Leger v neck, this idiotic masochism has to be dropped. There may have been a handful of ugly incidents, provoked by lumpen elements, after certain episodes of Muslim terrorism. But no true secularist or even Christian has been involved in anything like the torching of a mosque. (The last time that such a thing did happen on any scale—in Bosnia—the United States and Britain intervened militarily to put a stop to it. We also overthrew the Taliban, which was slaughtering the Hazara Shiite minority in Afghanistan.) But where are the denunciations from centers of Sunni and Shiite authority of the daily murder and torture of Islamic co-religionists? Of the regular desecration of holy sites and holy books? Of the paranoid insults thrown so carelessly and callously by one Muslim group at another? This mounting ghastliness is a bit more worthy of condemnation, surely, than a few Danish cartoons or a false rumor about a profaned copy of the Quran in Guantanamo. The civilized world—yes I do mean to say that—should find its own voice and state firmly to Muslim leaders and citizens that respect is something to be earned and not demanded with menace. A short way of phrasing this would be to say, “See how the Muslims respect each other!”

******

I wrote last week that Congress passed the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act on the initiative of the Clinton administration. Though this is true to some extent—the sponsor of the bill in the House, Rep. Benjamin Gilman, R-N.Y., introduced the legislation (which passed by 360 votes to 38) by saying that he had worked with the White House on its terms and that the administration did not oppose the measure—it would have been as accurate to credit those Herve Leger v neck sale, from Sens. Kerrey and Lott to Sens. Lieberman and McCain, who argued for the law as a means of making the Clinton administration live up to its public rhetoric. In signing the bill into law (after its unanimous passage by the Senate), President Bill Clinton spoke as if he was serious on the point. Those who wish to repudiate their past votes, therefore, should probably start by revisiting the view they took in 1998.

Barack Obama speaks at a Baptist church

Is Barack Obama the Everlasting Father? To answer this question, Slate has periodically gathered gratuitously adoring biographical details from newspaper, television, and magazine profiles of the U.S. senator from Illinois, best-selling author, Harvard Law Review president, Men’s Vogue cover model, Grammy winner, possible telepathic communicator with space aliens from distant galaxies, improvement on all civil rights gains since 1957, and declared presidential candidate.

Today’s entry is a double-header. We begin with this observation from a Sept. 7 Salon dispatch from the campaign trail by my friend and former Chatterbox comrade Walter Shapiro:

Paul Tewes, Obama’s Iowa coordinator, marveled Replica Bandage dresses, “It is something I’ve never seen before in politics. After people hear him speak, they say that they feel at peace.” That phrase—”feel at peace”—has also never been used before by a veteran campaign staffer since I covered my first Iowa caucus in 1980.

Does Tewes’ unusual choice of words demonstrate that Obama is the Prince of Peace? Just asking.

We next move on to Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., as quoted by Janny Scott in the Sept. 9 New York Times:

Mr. Rush has an explanation for Mr. Obama’s emergence after the dark days of 2000 as a political star four years later. He vanquished a field of multimillionaires, some more experienced and better known Cheap Bandage dresses, and benefited from fortuitous domestic scandals that sidelined two opponents and left him facing a Republican [Alan Keyes, who was] widely seen as unable to win.

“I would characterize the Senate race as being a race where Obama was Discount Emilio Pucci Dresses, let’s say, blessed and highly favored,” Mr. Rush said, chuckling. “That’s not routine.

There’s something else going on.”

What was he suggesting?

“I think that Obama Buy DKNY Clothing, his election to the Senate Buy BCBG Dresses, was divinely ordered,” Mr. Rush said, all other explanations failing. “I’m a preacher and a pastor; I know that that was God’s plan. Obama has certain qualities that—I think he is being used for some purpose. I really believe that.”

Keyes himself Christian Audigier Clothes sale, it’s only fair to note, stated during the campaign that “Christ would not vote for Barack Obama, because Barack Obama has voted to behave in a way that it is inconceivable for Christ to have behaved.” This represents, however, a minority view among Christian theologians and political reporters.

Wake Up and Smell the Keffiyeh

Is President Obama endangering Israel?

Charles Krauthammer thinks so. In today’s Washington Post, Krauthammer argues that Obama is undercutting the Jewish state by abandoning President Bush’s promises to support Israel in peace talks. Krauthammer is a friend and a terrific writer. But this time Replica Romain Jerome Watches, he’s got it wrong.

Let’s take his arguments point by point.

1. “Every Arab-Israeli negotiation contains a fundamental asymmetry: Israel gives up land, which is tangible; the Arabs make promises Discount Replica Chopard Watches, which are ephemeral.”

On June 5 Replica Breguet Watches for Cheap, 1967, the Arabs had Gaza, the Sinai, and the West Bank. They lost all that territory in six days. Land, like promises, can be taken away. Not easily, I’ll grant you. But if promises are broken, a well-armed Israel can seize land from which the attacks were launched.

Here’s the more important point: Security conditions Buy Cheap Replica Hamilton Watches, such as Israeli troops along the Jordan River, are tangible. Israel can bargain for such conditions as part of the deal. I’d support such conditions, and so would Obama. To quote his May 19 speech:

Israel must be able to defend itself, by itself Where find Replica Ulysse Nardin Watches, against any threat. Provisions must also be robust enough to prevent a resurgence of terrorism, to stop the infiltration of weapons, and to provide effective border security. The full and phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces should be coordinated with the assumption of Palestinian security responsibility in a sovereign, non-militarized state. And the duration of this transition period must be agreed, and the effectiveness of security arrangements must be demonstrated.

2. When “Israel undertook, for example, the Gaza withdrawal … President George W. Bush gave a written commitment that America supported Israel absorbing major settlement blocs in any peace agreement, opposed any return to the 1967 lines and stood firm against the so-called Palestinian right of return to Israel.”

Krauthammer provides a link to Bush’s 2004 letter. Here’s the key passage:

In light of new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli populations centers Best place to buy Replica Breitling Watches, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949 … It is realistic to expect that any final status agreement will only be achieved on the basis of mutually agreed changes that reflect these realities.
